Wine: Grange of Prince of Edward County Estate Gamay VQA
Price: $14.95 direct from the winery
Toto, I don’t think we’re in Beaujolais anymore! This week’s wine is a unique Gamay from the cool climate of Prince Edward County. It’s very tart – like barely ripened raspberries and red currants – and has a light herbal quality that reminds me vaguely of oil of oregano.
These assertive flavours, coupled with the higher alcohol content, bright acidity, and smooth tannins, make it a better pairing for food than I personally find Gamay traditionally. Tonight we had honey garlic sausage with mashed sweet potatoes and fresh parsley, and it was a great match.
I’ll definitely be looking for this wine again soon.
Note: This new Estate line from The Grange of Prince Edward is replacing the Trumpour’s Mill line, so if you were a fan of those wines and are missing them, then you’ll find yourself at home with these offerings.
